HIGH5 Sports Nutrition
As a sport scientist with a nervous digestive system, I’m possibly one of the hardest critics you can stumble across when it comes to sports nutrition and supplements. I’ve spent years on end researching and testing various products on both the local and international market to try and find that perfect match between nutritional benefit and digestive comfort, only to end in agonizing stomach pains more often than not.
Continuing my search, I then stumbled onto the UK-based brand, HIGH5 which has reportedly seen success with some of the globe’s best endurance sport athletes. Hovering over the ‘Order Now‘ button, I reassured myself, “heck, what do I have to lose?”
A few months later, and here’s exactly that answer…
With my history, the zero sugar, zero calorie electrolyte tab grabbed my immediate attention. Not only is it simple to throw it into your jersey pocket to mix later on your long rides, but it’s subtle yet refreshing taste makes it even more desirable on a hot day.
Packed with 56mg of magnesium, 70mg of potassium, 9mg of calcium and 200mg of sodium, 1 ZERO tab can greatly reduce the chances of performance-inhibiting symptoms associated with electrolyte imbalances such as cramping, headaches, nausea, dizziness, lethargy and even in some chronic cases, heatstroke.
I’ve since gotten into the habit of drinking 1 ZERO tab after runs of 30min or more (and 2 on hotter days) as well as stashing one or two in my jersey pocket for rides of over 1.5 hours.
HIGH5 Energy Source 2:1:
The big breakthrough moment for me when using Energy Source for the first time was noticing that my clear water bottle didn’t suddenly transform into a shocking bright colour. Being something that over the years I’d become quite used to, it made me realize just how much sugar and artificial sweeteners go into the average sports drink, and that immensely cutting back on this could ultimately increase my competitive performance as I could now drink more fluid than ever before without the gastro discomfort that I was used to.
As its name suggests, Energy Source 2:1 contains a unique ratio of maltodextrin and fructose. Combined with electrolytes, this provides 44g of carbohydrates per serving – offering you more than enough fuel to keep you going through just about any training session.
I now regularly use the citrus flavour from the beginning to end of any swim, bike or run session of 45min or longer.
HIGH5 Energy Gel:
There often comes a time in a training session or race when you find your body slowly giving up on you as you slip into a very deep, dark hole that seems almost impossible to get out of. This is when gels can be a lifesaver. The sucrose and fructose can give you an instant energy kick with the nutritional value of the carbohydrates there to back it all up.
Energy Gel offers a much higher than usual 23g of carbs, providing the carbohydrate burning endurance athlete with a sustainable energy level for up to 60 minutes.
Energy Gel also comes in a 30mg caffeine version, and although it can sometimes give my mid-workout metabolism a bit too much rumble, I’ve become a fan of using these gels before any big interval session in the pool or bike and sticking to the regular version at hourly intervals during big training sessions.
Possibly one of the most well thought through gels ever, IsoGel offers all the benefits of a 750ml bottle of Energy Source in one squeeze. A more liquid version of an energy gel, the IsoGel contains the sucrose and fructose of a normal gel, but with the addition of electrolytes (and even water) to increase both carbohydrate and electrolyte stores at once.
I’ve become a big fan of the orange flavour IsoGel and often slip it into my jersey pocket for those moments in the session when you realize you’ve fallen behind on your energy intake and alternate it between an EnergyGel on bigger, longer training sessions or races.
It’s pretty evident that over the past few months I’ve managed to find my match with HIGH5’s extensive sports nutrition range (that goes way beyond the above too), and I can confidently say that it’s become my go-to fuel for training and racing.
Here’s an overview of what I’ve discovered works best for me during a race:
10 – 15min before race start: EnergyGel+
Bike Leg: 750ml of EnergySource per hour, 1 X EnergyGel every 45min
Bike/Run Transition (T2): 350 – 500ml ZERO
Run Leg: 1 X IsoGel every 45min
10 – 15min after race finish: Protein Recovery, 1 X ZERO hourly for 2 – 3 hours
